Wednesday's final consisted of two half-hour matches where the players would be judged on their combined scores. Holzhauer came out on top in the first match, accumulating 28,309 points. Groce earned 21,400 and Raut 19,200.

When Groce got the final Daily Double in the second game, he brought his total of 29,200 points to 30,000, slightly widening his point gap with Holzhauer and Raut. Entering the Final round of Jeopardy! Groce had accumulated 34,000 points, with Holzhauer (8,800) and Raut (15,799) close behind. As long as Groce didn't make any foolish big bets, the game was his.

Groce bet nothing, correctly answering Henrietta Lacks and adding a message to his competitors in his post. ‘Great game, all of you - see you next year!’ 

‘James is very funny,’ Groce said. ‘He and I were standing next to each other during the Finals. And I just said, ‘Oh my God! Oh my God! Oh my God!’ And he said, ‘The fact that you do maths is the one thing that makes me feel optimistic here (laughs).’ Because he knows I have it.’
